How to Avoid Roofing Scams After a Hail Storm
How to Avoid Roofing Scams & Storm Chasers
Every time a major hail storm hits West Texas, dozens of out-of-town "roofing companies" flood the area. They knock on doors, make big promises, and disappear after cashing your insurance check. Here's how to protect yourself.
What Are Storm Chasers?
Storm chasers are roofing crews that travel from state to state following severe weather. They're not all scammers — but many operate with practices that put homeowners at risk:
- No local presence or permanent address
- Here today, gone in 6 months
- No accountability if problems arise
- Often use untrained subcontractors
- May not carry proper insurance or manufacturer certifications
Red Flags to Watch For
1. They knock on your door unsolicited
Legitimate local contractors don't need to go door-to-door. If someone shows up uninvited after a storm, be cautious.
2. They pressure you to sign immediately
"This deal is only good today" or "Your neighbor already signed" are high-pressure tactics. A reputable company gives you time to decide.
3. They offer to pay or waive your deductible
The Texas Department of Insurance says it is illegal for a contractor to waive, rebate, or absorb a property policyholder's deductible, or help the policyholder avoid paying it. Do not accept that offer; ask your insurer or the Texas Department of Insurance if you have questions.
4. They want a large upfront payment
Legitimate contractors may require a materials deposit (10-30%), but never 50%+ upfront. And never pay cash.
5. They can't provide local references
Ask for references from homeowners in YOUR city. If they can only provide references from other states, that's a problem.
6. Their "office" is a hotel room or P.O. box
Check their address. A real roofing company has a real location with real employees.
How to Verify a Roofing Contractor
Before signing anything, verify:
- Texas contractor registration — check with your city's building department
- Insurance — ask for a Certificate of Insurance (COI) showing general liability AND workers' comp
- BBB rating — check the Better Business Bureau
- Google reviews — look for consistent, long-term review history (not just recent 5-stars)
- Physical address — drive by their office
- Years in business locally — the longer, the better

If You've Already Signed with a Storm Chaser
Texas law gives you a 3-day right of rescission (see our guide to choosing a legitimate roofer) on contracts signed at your home. If you signed something you regret, you can cancel within 3 business days by sending written notice.
